Apple has released an update for users of its professional-grade applications. Apple ProKit 5.1 for Leopard and Snow Leopard improves the reliability of Apple's professional applications, and is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Soundtrack, Logic Pro and Logic Express.

On the Downloads section of its website, Apple describes the ProKit 5.1 for Leopard & Snow Leopard as follows:

About ProKit 5.1 (Leopard & SnowLeopard)

This ProKit Update fixes issues with user interface software resources that are shared by Apple's professional applications.

The issues addressed include:

- Corrected an issue with improper scrolling behavior.
- Resolved memory leaks for improved performance.
- Addressed layout of interface elements in certain application alert windows.

The update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Soundtrack, Logic Pro and Logic Express.

Recently, Apple issued a major update to Aperture, the company’s powerful photo-editing and -management software. Aperture 3 ships with over 200 new features including Faces, Places and Brushes and runs as a 64-bit application on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. According to Apple’s official announcement, Aperture 3 also introduces new tools to refine photos.

Besides Brushes, a feature used for painting image adjustments onto parts of a photograph, Apple introduced Adjustment Presets. This function is used to apply professional photo effects with as little as one click, according to the Mac maker. The new Aperture also includes new slideshows. Early adopters have been having problems with the new software. Apple soon issued a fix addressing some of them, but, apparently, more tweaking was in order.

By addressing memory leaks with the new ProKit 5.1 update, Apple may have also reduced CPU workload during the playback of audio files on its Mac Pro workstations, an issue reportedly plaguing users of the powerful desktop Macs for a while now. Following the release of Mac Pro Audio Update 1.0, some users reportedly continued to experience issues. ProKit 5.1 for Leopard & Snow Leopard should add another layer of protection against excessive increases in power use and processor core heat.
