This weekend was a sad one for the British Royal family or, at least, for one of its members: Prince William broke off his five-year engagement to Kate Middleton. After struggling really hard to earn the confidence and, above all, the acceptance of the Royal family, the two decided to go their separate ways because the relationship had cooled off too much in recent months.

Even if it was announced that there was no third party involved in the separation (according to the official statement, there was no infidelity on neither side), the British media is all in a frenzy, trying to figure out what exactly was that which drove the two former lovers apart. Some media outlets claim that the split came from William and not Kate, after a conversation he had with his father, Prince Charles.

Apparently, Charles told William that there was no point to leading Kate on if he wasn't planning on marrying her after all. This immediately prompted the 24-year-old prince to realize that it was best for Middleton if they just broke up. Other sources say that that which literally killed the relationship was the pressure they were under from all sides (both from the media and from the Royal family) and the fact that they were looking for different things: Kate wanted a serious commitment while William wasn't ready to settle down at the yet tender age of 24.

However, many tabloids and newspapers speculate that there were more causes to the split than the official one because, they say, you can't 'grow apart' just like that, in a matter of a couple of weeks. Their theory is that Kate was fed up with the constant media attention and the fact that the Prince always chose to hang out with his Army buddies and go out drinking with them, instead of spending time with her.

Be that as it may, that doesn't change the fact that Prince William is single now, even if he and Kate will continue to remain friends.
