21st of June 2007 marks the beginning of a new chapter in William's life. For you see, Diana left a very large sum of money to be inherited by her boys. William's cut was originally 6.5 million pounds, but today it is worth close to 9 million pounds. The second in line to the throne cannot receive the full amount until his 30th birthday. In the meantime, William is allowed a yearly allowance, of about $600.000.
Diana's will also stipulates that Harry will receive the same amount of money as his brother, after he turns 25 as well, and, just like William, he will be entitled to the full amount of money after his 30th birthday.
William has declared that he has no intention of making use of his mother's money (just yet). Both he and Harry are second lieutenants in the British army, being paid $44.000 a year. You might think that Diana's yearly allowance will make a big difference now, but don't forget that being the son of the future king of Britain has its perks. When in need of money, the boys turn to Charles. However, there won't be any royal banquets because William is currently training with his Army colleagues at Lulworth in Dorset.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of William's 25th birthday is the fact that he is now allowed to marry without the consent of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. However, that's unlikely to happen any time soon, seeing how just two months ago, William announced that he and girlfriend Kate Middleton will be going on their separate ways, after a long term relationship that lasted 5 years. The situation could change in the near future, but nobody heard any wedding bells up to now.
But still, not having to ask the Queen of England if you can marry the girl of your choosing (which is always a drag) should prove to be useful in the future. For the time being, this advantage is probably not going to be used, since William is highly favored to be the King of Britain someday and his upbringing does not allow him to go against the monarchy.
