Radeon HD 5800 Series prices drop

The IT industry is already in an uproar after NVIDIA, and its manufacturing partners, practically flooded the market with an entire stream of GeForce GTX 460 video cards. This newcomer is NVIDIA's first mainstream offer and has been quite well received by reviewers. Also, for ATI loyalists, such an event usually sets the stage for price cuts. A recent report suggests that this is exactly what has begun to occur now that an actual competition has sparked up.

According to what Fudzilla managed to uncover, online retailers have begun to cut down on the price tags of a variety of AMD Radeon HD 5800 series video boards. For instance, a British retailer reduced the tag of the HD 5850 to 239 Euro, and even Amazon has listings with 243 Euro prices, though they aren't yet selling. Models at $299 are available though.

It is the HD 5830 that really seems to have gone on a price diet, at least in the US. Since it is one of the main direct rivals to the GTX 460, it seems to have needed a better edge. As such, Newegg decreased overall pricing schemes of such boards by $10 to $20, leaving them at $199, just as much as the 768 MB GTX 460. This means that the 1GB HD 5830, with a 356-bit bus, has a bit of an advantage over this 192-bit NVIDIA product. European stores are also apparently taking similar actions, though they have been selling HD 5830 even over a month ago.

All in all, the idea is that an actual price war between NVIDIA and ATI, business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, has finally sparked. Granted, EU prices have been somewhat inconsistent these past weeks, because of the Euro weakening as a result of the troubled economy. Further price cuts are possible, though they probably won't be significant.
