PlayStation Vita hardware sales on the Japanese market have seen a big increase after Sony introduced a price cut for the handheld.

According to a statement from Hiroshi Kawano, the leader of Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan, translated by Gematsu, sales are now four times higher than during the previous week.

Both the 3G and the Wi-Fi models of the PlayStation Vita cost 19.980 Yen, the equivalent of 214 dollars (164 Euro).

It’s unclear whether Sony sees the effects of the Japanese price cut as a sign that a similar measure is also required on Western markets.

Ever since the PlayStation Vita was launched, Sony has maintained that the new device is performing well but, recently, the company was forced to acknowledge that it would like to have bigger sales in order to draw more big names to the platform.
