Prey 2 has been officially announced by its developer, Human Head, and its publisher, Bethesda, as a sequel to the pretty popular original, released back in 2006.

The first Prey, while not being a huge sales success, managed to draw in quite a few fans with its unique premise, putting the players in the shoes of a native American forced to fight an evil alien race that wanted to destroy Earth's natural resources.

Now, the developer of the original, Human Head, alongside publisher Bethesda, has announced that a sequel is in development, called, what else, Prey 2.

The new game is scheduled to arrive in 2012, for all major platforms, and is set to use the id Tech engine from id Software, a subsidiary of Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media.

“We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2,” said Chris Rhinehart, project lead. “Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We’re excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are.”

As of yet, however, not a lot is known about the new game, as the two companies have limited themselves to just confirming that it exists.

The full preview will appear in the May issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine, but, until then, we can only guess where the game will see its action go.

The original game was released back in 2006, but was in development, in one form or another, since 1995.

Human Head is already familiar with id Software's engine, as it used a heavily modified version of the previous id Tech 4 on the first game.

Prey 2 is scheduled to appear in 2012, for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
