Pete Hines, leader of marketing at publisher Bethesda, has clarified the situation of Prey 2, the open-world action adventure game that Human Head Studios was developing, saying that the company is still working on it and has clear plans for its future.

The executive stated via Twitter that, “To clarify, I didn’t say Prey 2 was canx. Gave an interview in English, translated to Dutch, translated back to English.”

His initial statements were quoted as, “I can be very clear about this. At one point, we looked at Prey 2 and decided that in its current state, with all the money, time, and resources we put into it, it didn’t meet our expectations. So we decided to pull the plug from our end.”

It’s not clear what exactly Hines was referring to in his initial comments, but Bethesda or the executive himself will probably offer some more clarification in the coming days.

Prey 2 was first announced as being in development at Human Head Studios, the company that also created the first title in the series, with the launch date set for this fall.

The game was very changed, including a new protagonist which was a bounty hunter on an alien world and somehow found Tommy, the main character of the first game.

The core mechanics are also different, with gameplay sequences shown by Bethesda emphasizing the action element of the game and the exploration of the alien world.

Earlier during 2012 Bethesda announced that it was pushing Prey 2 to an unannounced date next year and rumors have suggested that Human Head is no longer associated with the project.

The developer is already working on a sequel to its own title Rune.

Bethesda has also stopped showing Prey 2 publicly, which might mean that another team has taken over the project and is re-designing aspects of the experience.
