Video game publisher Bethesda has officially announced that it has not canceled development of Prey 2, as rumors suggested over the last month, adding that the game is no longer slated for a 2012 launch.

The official statements says, “The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans.”

Bethesda adds that it has high-quality standards for all of its core titles and that it is willing to give development teams more time in order to make sure that Prey 2 will be the best product it can.

Prey 2 is being created by Human Head Studios and was last shown during the E3 2011 trade show.

It only has a limited link to the first title in the series and the main character will take on the role of a bounty hunter working for various alien clients.
