Police have recovered fragments of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attack on Monday, April 15.

Investigators have found explosives placed inside six-liter pressure cookers, hidden in black duffel bags and positioned by the side of the road in the finish line area. What's left of the bombs can be observed above.

According to Newsy, this type of bomb has been seen before in Afghanistan and it is referred to as an Improvised Explosive Device, or IED.

“#Boston bomb in pressure cooker device within a backpack that was set off w a remote timer,” tweets NBC News correspondent for Capitol Hill news Luke Russert.

However, cellphones are usually used to detonate this kind of explosive device in Afghanistan, and officials have yet to confirm how the detonation took place.
