Mobile phone maker Motorola and wireless services provider Verizon Wireless are expected to come to the market in the not too far future with a new, highly appealing smartphone, a successor to the DROID X handset that was launched on shelves last year.

The sequel would arrive on shelves with similar looks as the original DROID X, though with enhanced hardware and with more capabilities than that device.

The new mobile phone, said a few times to land on shelves as Motorola DROID X2, is now expected to arrive as the DROID X^2 (meaning X-squared), the guys over at Pocketnow note in a recent article.

The news site also came up with new photos with the device, press photos, which not only offer us a better look at the device, but also reveal the aforementioned DROID X^2 branding.

The specifications list of the new mobile phone would include a 1.2GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, along with the same large 4.3-inch touchscreen display as the predecessor, though with a higher resolution, qHD.

The powerful application processor would be complemented by 768MB of RAM. Users should also enjoy a microSD memory card slot for expanding the available internal memory, but specific info on the total amount of storage space did not emerge for the time being.

The rest of the specifications would remain the same as with the original, including the eight-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with 720p HD video recording capabilities, or the HDMI port.

Moreover, the handset should include support for EV-DO cellular broadband, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, built-in GPS receiver, and the usual set of sensors.

No specific info on the Android platform version the new mobile phone would run under when launched emerged for the time being, but Gingerbread might be included into the mix, if not at launch, then shortly after.

For the time being, however, nothing was officially confirmed on the availability of the new device, but it might not be too long before that happens, so stay tuned to learn more info on the matter.
