14 DAY TRIAL // Komodo is an IDE for dynamic Web languages, published by ActiveState, a former Sophos division. This program has support for Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and Tcl on Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and Windows, being built using the Mozilla platform. Its latest stable release is version 3.5.3, launched in April 2006, and the third beta of version 4 was released last December, but according to the company, we'll be able to get our hands on the final one this month.
This week, ActiveState announced that Komodo IDE 4.0 has reached its final development stage, and they are estimating to have the final version ready to be released to the public on the 23rd of January. This new version is described as the first unified IDE for dynamic Web languages, combining code for browsers, servers and the HTTP protocol into a single package.
Komodo features multi language support, as well as multi document editing, allowing you to work on multiple documents at the same time, and the multilingual input method editor (IME) support is an excellent addition that gives you the ability to use your standard US keyboard to enter complex multibyte characters and symbols, such as Simplified Chinese.
Syntax highlighting for over 30 languages is included, as well as instant feedback that helps you write correct code quickly. HTML preview, code snippets and code-folding are also available, as well as many other features, from the graphical user interface builder to the graphical debugger and code browser.
While pricing for the upcoming releases (Personal and Professional versions) wasn't specified yet, ActiveState said that registered Komodo IDE 3.5.3 Professional users (300$) will receive a free upgrade. On Apple computers, Komodo requires a G4 processor or Intel, 256MB of RAM, 90MB of hard drive space and Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
