14 DAY TRIAL // A woman from Indiana has come across an envelope full of cash and she has returned the entire amount.
Shannon Baker could have pocketed $4,000 (€3,020) in her parking lot find, but she chose to do the right thing. Baker is pregnant and she is almost due, and both her and her husband are out of job.
Baker lives in Merrillville and her pregnancy will be carried to term in just a few weeks, she has described. According to Huffington Post, she went to the police station and declared her find.
When speaking to her, officers have asked her if she knows that keeping found money is not against the law.
She explains that it “was the right thing to do,” adding that she wanted to set a good example for her daughter.
The 27-year-old notes that the little girl was by her side when she came across the envelope. She took advantage of the opportunity to teach her a lesson about morals.
“My kid was standing right there when I found it. [...] So basically I taught my daughter how to be honest. And for me that was fine,” she says.
“For me, it was to teach my daughter honesty and morally showing what I was taught growing up. To be honest about what you do,” Baker adds.
Had the money not been claimed in 180 days, it would have been returned to her. However, that was not the case as an elderly woman contacted the police. They gave her Baker's address and she came by to thank her.
“She came to my house and she was almost in tears, thanking me. [...] She gave me a hug and an envelope with a small amount in it,” Baker describes.
The woman in her 70s could give information about the bills and their provenience, and she explained that they “worked their way out of” her pocket.
