This past Wednesday, a pregnant woman in the US was attacked by another woman who stabbed her, cut her unborn baby out from her womb and ran away with it, leaving the mother-to-be in a pool of blood.

The shocking incident occurred in Longmont, a municipality in Colorado. The pregnant woman was attacked around 2 p.m. The police have since identified the assailant and arrested her.

The woman, 34-year-old Dynel Catrece Lane, is now behind bars. She stands accused of assault, attempted murder and child abuse. It is unclear why she turned against the mother and cut her open.

The unborn child did not survive the attack

The 26-year-old victim, whose identity has not yet been made public, met 34-year-old Dynel Catrece Lane on the day of the incident, when she came to her home to have a look at some baby clothes advertised by the attacker on Craigslist.

The mother-to-be arrived at Dynel Catrece Lane's house in Longmont unaccompanied. For reasons still unknown, the 34-year-old pulled out a knife, stabbed her and then removed her baby from her womb.

Just hours later, she showed up at a local hospital holding the 7-month-old fetus in her arms. She told doctors that the baby was her own and that she had just had a miscarriage. Since this obviously wasn't the case, authorities were alerted.

By the time Dynel Catrece Lane sought help from doctors, the baby died. Although in critical condition, its mother, rushed to the Longmont United Hospital after the attack, might pull through.

The attacker has a family of her own

The police officers handling this case say 34-year-old Dynel Catrece Lane is married and has two children of her own. This makes her actions all the more puzzling.

Although he was the one who drove her to the emergency room, the woman's husband is not considered a suspect. Thus, there is no evidence that he was in any way involved in the attack, NBC affiliate KUSA informs.

Instead, it is understood that the only reason the attacker's spouse agreed to take her and the child to the nearest hospital was that he hoped the baby might still be alive or that doctors could somehow bring it back.
