Thomas Beatie, now known solely as “the pregnant man,” and his wife of 9 years have separated. The announcement comes as a shock, shortly after Beatie completed the gender reassignment process by undergoing surgery.

In 2008, Beatie grabbed international headlines when it was revealed that he, legally a man, was carrying a child.

Nancy, his wife, could not have any more babies so he chose to keep his female organs to carry the couple's kids, while presenting an outwardly male appearance – hence the nickname.

They have had 3 babies so far, with each birth announcement bringing a new wave of controversy, nasty comments but, at the same time, messages of support and love.

In a recent interview taped the other day, but which only airs in the first week of May, Beatie drops the bomb on his marriage, the Daily Mail reports.

He also reveals that he is now 100% male but insists Nancy is yet to know him like this intimately.

“Nancy hasn’t seen the new me yet. Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and we’re going through a rough patch right now. At the moment, we’re separated,” Beatie says in the interview.

As much media turmoil as Thomas caused with his initial announcement, he and his family managed to live outside the spotlight for years, which would explain why news of the separation didn't get out in the press before he broke it himself.

Last time the couple did an interview was in October last year, when Beatie revealed he'd decided to have hysterectomy and medically stabilize himself as a man.

He said he and Nancy had always wanted children and, now that they had 3, they'd come to the conclusion their dream had come true, so Thomas would have the procedure, as we also reported at the time.
