14 DAY TRIAL // When she became pregnant with her second child, Jess Gayford of Bristol, UK, expected some cravings would be involved. After all, her first pregnancy had her want to eat baked beans and cheese round the clock.
However, the young woman was not prepared to deal with the sudden and uncontrollable urge to eat soap that she experienced shortly after she and her partner Lee Trimby learned that they were expecting another child.
It all started with just one bar
In an interview, the woman explained that it all started one day when, while going about her daily business, she felt the need to grab a bar of soap and lick it.
She tried shaking off this peculiar urge, but eventually, she gave up and went ahead and did it. The 26-year-old mother-to-be thought the taste of the soap would make her sick and she would be rid of her bizarre craving in no time.
This did not happen. Rather, she found the soap quite to her liking and just the one lick she was ready and willing to indulge in was followed by many more.
“It came out of nowhere. I wanted to lick a bar of Dove soap. I went to buy a bar and started licking it,” the young mother explained in an interview. “It sounds disgusting but it's really nice,” she added, as cited by Metro.
Medical experts suspect that her second pregnancy caused Jess Gayford to develop a rare condition known as pica disorder and that boils down to having an appetite for inedible items.
She cannot stop eating soap
The young woman is now 8 months pregnant and will soon deliver her baby girl. Even so, she says that she cannot help but lick bars and even sip liquid soap every once in a while.
At first, her partner Lee Trimby was a tad concerned about whether Jess Gayford's unusual craving for soap might harm their child. Apparently, doctors reassured him that he had nothing to worry about.
