It seems that, as soon as the webOS root image made it into the wild, some people on the web already jumped on it and cracked it open. The 195 MB webOS root comes with the “webOS Reset Doctor,” which is a tool that has the purpose of reflashing broken Pres. According to the guys at PreCentral, one of the things that have been spotted in the ROM, though it hasn't been unveiled before, is a Java Virtual Machine.

The fact that the webOS root image has been cracked might not impress everybody out there, yet those who have some knowledge in the area understand that this is actually a rather important thing. The ROM will allow those who are interested to learn some more details about the Pre, while also offering them the possibility to discover some of the hidden software features that Palm hasn't made public until now.

According to PreCentral, the leaked ROM also unveils the fact that a second mobile phone based on the recently released operating system is in the works, confirming this way the already rumored Palm Eos handset (codenamed Pixie). It seems that all that remains to be done from now on is to wait for Palm to officially announce the new handset, something that, hopefully, won't happen in the distant future.

Here's what the webOS code says (according to niteice from the PreCentral.net forums): # Start novacomd service if [[ "$hostName" == "castle" ]];then modprobe g_composite product=0x8002 elif [[ "$hostName" == "pixie" ]];then modprobe g_composite product=0x8012 else modprobe -q g_composite fi

Considering the hype Pre saw before its release, it does not come as a surprise that enthusiasts rushed to learn more details on the hidden capabilities of the new device and of its operating system. Given this state of facts, we can expect to hear that even more features have been unveiled to the world, so stay tuned to learn more details as soon as they become available.
