LiVES 2.2.3, a simple-to-use, powerful video editor and VJ tool that allows users to combine real time and rendered effects, streams, and multiple video/audio files, is now available for download.

LiVES is an application that can help users start editing and making videos without having to worry about formats, frame sizes, or framerates, which is actually a big helping hand if we keep in mind that this is a completely free application.

“It allows you to combine realtime and rendered effects, streams and multiple video/audio files, and then encode to over 50 formats. It is small in size, yet it has many advanced features and lets you start editing and making video right away, without having to worry about formats, frame sizes, or framerates. LiVES will let you start creating your own tools, utilities and effects via the built in RFX builder.”

“LiVES is aimed at the digital video artist who wants to create their own content, the video editor who wants to create professional looking video, and the VJ who wants to captivate with spectacular images,” say the developers on the official website.

The application is compatible with all the open source platforms, including Linux, BSD, openMosix, IRIX, OSX/Darwin, and more. It will also run on pretty much all types of architectures, like x86, amd64, x86_64, i64, sparc, hppa, ppc, and xbox/x86.

LiVES allows users to perform a multitude of tasks, including loading and editing of most video formats, smooth playback at variable frame rates, forward and in reverse, lossless backup, real time blending of clips, live inputs for Firewire and TV cards, real time capture/recording of interactive windows, rotation, resizing and trimming of video clips, and much more.

According to the changelog, it's now possible to run data processing plugins in both video and audio threads, a crash that occurred when loading a device map (regression) has been fixed, a bug that prevented audio changes from being recorded when audio analyzers were running has been fixed, the app will now need at least GTK+ 3.8, and the FFMpeg has been improved.

The developers of LiVES provide a number of binaries for a few operating systems, but most of them are out of date, with the exception of the source package. It may be a hassle to compile, but this is a powerful and interesting software and the effort is worth it.
