The developers have corrected some small issues

OpenELEC is an embedded operating system built specifically to run the XBMC media player solution and to work on virtually any kind of device out there. This is just an update, but it's still quite an interesting read.

The OpenELEC 4.2.0 distro has just received its first major update, although it's not quite as big as you might imagine. There are the regular package upgrades and other smaller fixes, and no new features have been implemented. A few problems had been reported, but they have been corrected.

OpenELEC is based on the XBMC project, but this is a Linux distribution as well and numerous components need maintenance and constant care, not just the media hub. This is one of the reasons for the numerous releases and the main reason for the current launch.

Users should update as soon as possible

Even if it doesn't seem like a big deal, it's still a good idea to upgrade as soon as possible. The problems reported and fixed in OpenELEC 4.2.1 didn’t have a big impact on the user base, but if you did experience any issues it's recommended to take a look at the changes.

"Since OpenELEC 4.0 we have reworked many parts of the underlying OS. This release is the result of 6 months of development and testing and will be the basis for the upcoming OpenELEC-5.0 release series which is planned to release with Kodi-14 later this year."

"If you are going to update from one of our older releases, we STRONGLY advise that you make a backup of your XBMC data and do a manual update. You can use our OpenELEC Settings addon if you are using OpenELEC-3.2 or later to backup your data," reads the official announcement.

The devs have explained that WLAN should now work with Aetheros HTC-based WLAN sticks, it no longer matters if the user presses two keys at the same time on the remote, the Xorg mouse cursor is no longer visible, under any circumstances, the ASS/SSA subtitles have been corrected, the CPU temperature is reported correctly now, and some annoying stuttering issues with Intel GPUs have been fixed.

It's also worth pointing out that OpenELEC doesn’t need an update to fix the Bash vulnerability because this project hasn’t been using that particular package for a long time.

More details about the changes and improvements can be found in the official announcement. You can download the latest OpenELEC 4.2.1 right now from Softpedia.
