pfSense, a free open-source customized distribution based on FreeBSD designed to be used as a firewall and router, has advanced to version 2.2.2 and is now available for download.

Many users think of Linux when they hear about an open-source firewall, but the truth is that many of the distros out there that focus on being a firewall or a router are based on various BSD flavors, like FreeBSD, for example. pfSense is not the only distribution around, but it's one of the best. It's constantly updated by its developers, and it's difficult to find anything safer.

pfSense makers have explained that the their open-source distro has managed to displace solutions that are expensive and with great pedigree, such as Check Point, Cisco PIX, Cisco ASA, Juniper, Sonicwall, Netgear, Watchguard, Astar, and quite a few others. The fact that pfSense can be adapted to work in small settings, like a house, and to become a solution for big corporations or universities is a testament to its prowess.

Latest pfSense update is a maintenance one

The previous release for this distro was a major one, but not each release needs to be groundbreaking. The 2.2.2 release for pfSense is a maintenance one, but that doesn't mean that users shouldn't upgrade. It's quite the opposite.

"pfSense software version 2.2.2 release is now available, bringing a number of bug fixes and a couple low-risk security updates that don’t apply to most users. As always, you can upgrade from any previous version straight to 2.2.2. For those already running any 2.2x version, this is a low risk upgrade on most hardware, and all the hardware we sell," reads the official website.

More details about this distribution are available in the official announcement. You can download pfSense 2.2.2 right now from Softpedia and give it a try.
