Aria2 1.18.5, a utility for downloading files that support multiple protocols such as HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink, has been released and is now available for download.

There are many download managers for the Linux platform and lately a few very powerful applications have been released for this specific purpose, but they all feature a GUI. The entire Linux community is now shifting towards applications that come with a GUI and there are less and less users that rely on the terminal.

Aria2 is a download manager that comes with some great features, such as custom HTTP Header support, magnet links support, segmented downloading, and more. The developers have been updating this software constantly and it's now one of the best of its kind.

“This release adds new RPC authorization mechanism using --rpc-secret option. The existing --rpc-user and --rpc-passwd options are now deprecated, and all applications using RPC API is strongly encouraged to migrate to the new mechanism.”

“The new RPC method, aria2.saveSession, was added, which tells aria2 server to save session file immediately. There are several enhancements and bug fixes,” reads the official announcement.

Because it packs so many features, the developers have a lot of work to do between versions and it shows in the changelog. For example, the error that is displayed when setting the DSCP value can now be ignored, a BitTorrent download failure on the Mingw build has been fixed, support has been added for the RPC channel encryption in aria2rpc, and the aria2.saveSession RPC method has been added.

This latest change is actually quite important. According to the developers, the method saves the current session to a file specified by the --save-session option. This method returns "OK" if the procedure has been a success.

Also, a numStoppedTotal key has been added to the aria2.getGlobalStat() RPC method response. This is used to show the number of stopped downloads in the current session that are not capped by the --max-download-result option.

A number of smaller fixes and changes have been implemented. Also, the handling of 30x HTTP status codes is now better, the new RPC authorization is now using --rpc-secret option, the --enable-color option has been added in order to enable or disable the terminal color output, DSCP support has been added, and workaround has been implemented for a GnuTLS bug with OCSP status extension.
