Those who don't make their own computers may like this initiative

There are plenty of custom PC makers out there who sell and ship systems to people, gamers or otherwise, and ASUS wants in on the action.

This is probably something we won't indulge in, since we like to buy our PC parts ourselves, to later build a computer the way we want it.

Many people, however, especially those who lack the IT know-how needed to pull a DIY (do-it-yourself) rig off, call on brand vendors to do this for them, even though the cost is, in the end, higher.

Maingear, Cyberpower, IBuyPower, Origin PC, these are just a few examples of custom PC builders and sellers.

ASUS doesn't quite want to become something along these lines, but it did launch its “Powered by ASUS” program.

Through a process similar to choosing from an existing list of hardware parts, customers will be able to create a working machine out of ASUS parts.

“There are a lot of hardware enthusiasts and ASUS fans out there that do not build their own PCs, but want additional performance and features typically not available in off-the-shelf systems,” said Timothy Lin, director of product management at ASUS.

“This unique program offers consumers the ability to custom configure a system utilizing a wide variety of high-quality ASUS components.”

To kickstart its campaign, ASUS is shipping a free Xonar DSX sound card with all custom rigs, as long as the order is made this September (2012).

Keep in mind, though, that it's not ASUS that will be putting together your PC, but one of its several authorized retailers.

In addition to those mentioned above, Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, Geekbox, Puget Systems and V3 Gaming are among the boutique vendors that can create “Powered by ASUS” computers.

ASUS is probably confident that its brand power is strong enough to make its idea work, or perhaps it is using this plan as a means to gauge that strength. Or both. Either way, the official web page of the program can be found here.
