Powerbooks G4 Are Melting

Did you know that the older Powerbooks G4 and the polar ice caps have something in common? I had no idea until one hour
ago, when I ran into not one, but two articles on Gizmodo about something that made me relate Apple's notebooks with Antarctica's icebergs. Obviously, you're all wondering what statement could be true for such different items - a computer and a massive block of ice. Well, I won't keep you waiting, so here's the naked truth: just like the polar ice caps, the G4's are melting!

Interesting find, don't you agree? Even more, these old laptops from Apple are not even affected by the global warming, they simply go hot and then... you can notice the result in the picture I attached here! Now, let's check yesterday's reports about melted Powerbook keyboards...

The first one belongs to a certain Nancy Drew, and it seems the story is rather short, as usual with such happenings: the laptop was hot, the owner closed it and left; when he came back, the keyboard was completely melted. The worst part of this story is that the Genius Bar guys said this is the "hair dryer trick", made to get a new laptop, so they didn't change it.

Of course that we can't say what exactly is the truth, but I don't think that one trying to trick Apple into getting a new laptop by melting its keyboard with a hair dryer would complain about the fact that Apple's staff didn't get the bait, don't you agree?

Moving on, we find Dustin's G4, and I must tell you that the one in the picture is his. While Nancy's G4 melted this week, Dustin's did it about five years ago. The scenery is also very simple - he placed the Powerbook on the desk, started it up, launched SETI and went to bed. Well, probably SETI found some Martian TV and couldn't handle it, I can't really say, but the certain thing is that our Dustin woke up to the smell of burning plastic!

This is it, ladies and gentlemen, two melted Powerbooks G4, about five years away one from the other, and it would be useful for other people to share their stories with us, so we may get a clearer view of the big picture. For now, I am sure that without any further proof, the ice caps issue is something to worry about more than the G4's...
