Prepares Radeon HD 5970 with 12 DisplayPort outputs

Whether it is going too far or just far enough, PowerColor seems to be planning on blasting any multi-monitor competition out of the sky with its newest beast. It has been known for a while that AMD's partners are hard at work making 4GB HD 5970 cards, but it can be said that there was little to prepare the enthusiast segment for what PowerColor is devising. Seeking the pinnacle of multi-display setups, the company is reportedly finishing up work on a card that will give even the richest enthusiasts something to think about.

PowerColor's upcoming Radeon HD 5970 with 4GB of GDDR5 memory will not have Eyefinity support, it won't even be called an Eyefintiy 6 adapter. Taking up no less than three PCI Express slots and set to have a cooler just as massive, the card has no less than 12 mini DisplayPort outputs, for a completely new kind of multi-monitor scenarios.

Eyefinity was well-received because it provided more immersions, whereas the Eyefinity 6 technology was not as successful because the monitors' bezel cut through the exact middle of the image. Instead of waiting for this issue to be solved by more predictable means (monitors with slim bezels), PowerColor, instead, plans to make the “lines” less noticeable by doubling the total display surface. Of course, this approach is not all that easy to implement.

It is unclear how much this card will cost but, regardless, only enthusiasts with a strong bank account to back them up will be able to afford the card and the 12 displays needed. Of course, the total cost will be much higher if said enthusiasts need to buy a new house with a room big enough to accommodate 12 monitors mounted next to and on top of each other.

For better or worse, the card's clock speeds have not yet been set. Still, considering that the product is set to be unleashed at Computex, it won't be long until the final details are revealed.
