Portable Linux operating system based on the Linux Live Scripts, Porteus Kiosk Edition, has been upgraded to version 3.4.0 and is now available for download.

There are not too many Linux operating systems still based on Gentoo, and it's not usually the first choice for the base, but that doesn't make it a bad choice. In fact, Gentoo is well known for its versatility, but it does require that developers have a little bit more experience with it.

The previous Porteus Kiosk Edition release was a big one, and it was launched just a few months ago. The current update to the portable operating system is even bigger, and a ton of changes have been made. This is more than just upgraded packages, so users should really consider upgrading as soon as possible.

What's new in Porteus Kiosk Edition 3.4.0

The developers have noted that "the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.18.14 and supports a much wider range of the hardware including x86 compatible tablets and embedded/industrial devices. Default ISO size has been reduced to 36 MB as the browser component is not present in it and must be not downloaded from the network during installation."

According to the changelog, Google Chrome is now provided as an alternative browser to Firefox, UEFI support has been updated in order to support PCs equipped with 32bit EFI firmware, the Kiosk ISO can now be saved on removable devices, the "search for text when I start typing" feature in Firefox preferences has been disabled, the ripples screensaver is now default, and numerous other fixes and improvements have been made.

The Kiosk Edition is a different type of Linux distribution, and it's not really aimed at regular users. It's built for devices that are usually employed by multiple users, and it's made in such a way that it's virtually impossible to break. A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement.
