Porn Sultan Puts the Heat on Tom Cruise

The man who made possible such cinematographic masterpieces as 'Saved by the Smell' with Screech Dustin Diamond and 'One Night in Paris' with none other than Paris Hilton is now in federal custody! Of course, most of us just know the work of the genius that is David Hans Schmidt and his name doesn't ring any bells, but this is exactly why we should learn a few things about the career of the man who used to call himself the 'Sultan of Sleaze'.

A while ago, Schmidt went into business big time: he would get his hands on various celebrity sex tapes and incriminating photos and then, right before going to some porn studio to sell them, he would contact the persons on it to ask them if they wanted to buy the material back from him and, thus, keeping it away from the public eye. Now, I don't know just how legal such a job was but it certainly worked just fine for Schmidt until now. For those who are not in the know, Schmidt made a fortune off Paris Hilton and Screech's sex tape (both of which went public - if it's still necessary to mention it) as well as off other celebrities who managed to recuperate all X-rated evidence from his hold (Jamie Foxx being just one of them).

But all these celebrities, no matter how big or small they are, can't obviously hold a candle to Tom Cruise, who is certainly not the right man to go around messing with. Apparently, the Sultan came into the possession of a bunch of photos taken at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding (in November 2006) and he was trying to sell them back to the couple for the not-so-modest amount of $1 million. It is yet unsure how compromising the pics were but, seeing that Schmidt asked for so much money in return for them and that his main area of interest is, well, pornography, we can as well imagine that they were pretty damaging for the reputation of the two.

Unfortunately, this is one instance which only goes to show that things never go as planned: the moment Tom was contacted by Schmidt about the photos, he called the FBI and revealed that he was a victim of an extortion plot, naming Schmidt as the culprit. From that moment on, the case became federal and it eventually ended on Tuesday, when the Sultan was apprehended. Reports indicate that he was held for a while at a detention center in LA and later released on a $100,000 bail. No court date has yet been set.

This just goes to show that, whatever works with the likes of Paris Hilton and Dustin Diamond, will not work with Tom Cruise! Stay tuned here for more details.
