Researchers find cadmium, chromium, aluminum and other metals in lipsticks

Not long ago, a team of University of California researchers went on a shopping spree and ended up purchasing a total of 32 lipsticks and glosses from several different drugstores, department stores and chain stores.

Rest assured, the researchers were not interested in getting a complete makeover. Quite the contrary: they merely wanted to test the lipsticks and determine their chemical makeup.

According to Huffington Post, the 32 lipsticks tested as part of this investigation were found to contain a total of nine potentially harmful metals. Some of these metals were cadmium, chromium and aluminum.

The specialists wished to stress the fact that none of the concentrations for these metals was high enough to pose any immediate health risks.

Still, they did admit being worried about the risks associated with chronic exposure.

“We looked at nine heavy metals and found that all of them were present in most of the lipsticks, but not necessarily at really high levels,” study author Katharine Hammond said.

“Low levels of metals may not create a risk, but as the exposure increases, the damage can increase,” Katharine Hammond further argued.
