76-year-old Amalia Damonte speaks in an interview with a local Argentinian TV station about her relationship with Jorge Mario Bergoglio, currently pope Francis.
When the pair were neighbors in Flores, Buenos Aires, a 12-13 years old had a crush on Damonte. She felt the same way, but it was over when he sent her a letter.
He declared his love for her and told her she wanted to marry her and live together in a white house. Unfortunately, her father uncovered the note and separated them.
She jokingly recalls having him tell her how he would become a priest. According to Africa News Post, he was ordained in 1969, some 20 years later.
“We used to play on the streets here. It was a quiet neighborhood then, and, well, he was very nice,” she describes.
