In a televised sermon in St Peter’s Square on Wednesday, June 5, Pope Francis has spoken out on the issue of waste.

He mentions that wasting food is like taking it directly from the hands of those who need it and cannot afford it.

According to the Telegraph, his plea for less waste comes on the United Nations World Environment Day. He addresses a culture of waste, in which consumerism has taken over basic humanity.

He reminds us of the time when our grandparents would make efforts not to throw away any food, and makes a comparison to our waste-riddled modern-day society.

In the meantime, “many individuals and families are suffering from hunger and malnutrition” and could be helped by our excess food products.

“Throwing away food is like stealing from the table of the poor and the hungry,” the Pope says.
