Newly elected pope Francis is already proving a modest representative of the church that aims to be close to the people, by picking up his bags at the hotel he was staying at and actually paying his own bill.

After the honor of ruling over 1.2 billion Roman Catholics is bestowed upon us, not many of us would swing back to the hotel and do these things ourselves, since there is no doubt about the fact that many people would be glad to do them for us.

Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has shown humility on his first day on the job by wearing his iron cardinal crucifix instead of the golden pontiff one. In addition to that, refusing to wear the pontiff red cape, he put one a white cassock, Zee News informs.

Posted above are shots from the Domus Internationalis Paulus VI, the “palazzo” or palace that hosted the cardinals as they deliberated during the papal elections.

According to its website, the 15th-century facility has been rebuilt to offer hospitality services to clerics, during John Paul II's time as pope. The building is located on Via della Scrofa in Rome and also houses the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music.
