Britney Spears remains, for 2009 as well, the most sought after celebrity, making more headlines even when out shopping than other artists for putting on a spectacular show. She has had one of the most mediated and brilliant comebacks in music history, yet competition on the scene is so tight that she seems very close to losing her hard-earned crown of the ultimate Princess of Pop, e-zine ThatGrapeJuice argues. Fans will always love Britney, that much is certain, just as also is the fact that critics will give credit where it’s due. That happened with her latest releases, and it also occurred back in the day when the troubles in her personal life seemed to present more interest for the general public than a new single or video she put out. Still, after her publicized meltdowns, something seems to have been irremediably lost. That, combined with the fact that other pop artists are coming strong from behind, seems to tear at the very foundation of Britney’s claim to the title of Princess of Pop.
“She was once the most powerful force in Pop music; the heir apparent to the Pop dynasty. It seemed that at the turn of the century, there was no bigger star than Britney Spears. From show-stopping performances to worldwide #1 successes, she exploded onto the charts, toppling the long held reign of more established artists. However, the ‘fire’ that once made Spears the most sought after entertainer of her time appears to have been lost,” the e-zine says. From one of the best performers on the scene, Spears is now reduced to only running through the motions, as if there is nothing behind the glitzy, well-synchronized façade, the report goes on to argue. She still has her millions of fans from around the world, some of whom would fight tooth and nail to prove that she remains the best artist pop music has to offer, but the problem is that she’s not earning new followers. To make matters even more potentially worse, other singers, like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce are putting in 100% to have their music reach as many fans as possible and to make their appearances, no matter how few, truly memorable. On the other hand, Spears seems to no longer care about any of that. “Regardless of the position that her music is now arguably at its best, the energy that Spears exudes in the studio no longer translates on stage. In fact, some critics assert that it is this decline in potency that allowed Beyonce to rise to the helm of the Pop charts. This begs the question: has Spears permanently lost the ‘glint’ in her eye? Or does she stand a chance of returning to fine form? In any case, with mounting competition from her younger contemporaries including Lady GaGa and Rihanna, many contend that unless she is able to recapture that ‘magic,’ her days as the Princess of Pop are surely numbered,” the e-zine goes on to say. Sadly, many happen to be of the same opinion as the one stated above. The end of the decade finds Britney Spears as a mere shadow of the performer she promised to be a few years ago. In time, her routine will wear out and people will find replacements for her from the many options available. Of course, fans – true fans – are free to disagree.

| Comment #1 by: b-fan on 01 Jan 2010, 09:54 UTC | reply to this comment | I do disagree. Britney remains strong and has put a 2 great albums with many hit singles in the past 2 years. After a bit of a bump in the road which all artist have in some degree. The media needs to stop concentrating on tearing her down and giving people false ideals about her. A fan forever. |
| Comment #1.1 by: amazing girl on 14 Nov 2011, 17:03 GMT | that is so rite she should still be pop princess |
| Comment #2 by: Ben on 01 Jan 2010, 10:08 UTC | reply to this comment | Give the girl some time to recover, Britney is a legend... Gaga, Rihanna & Beyonce can't reach to her level.
Only time will tell, Britney's next album is at works - wait 'til her return, I'm sure she'll blow us all away with the return of the true Queen B into the charts! |
| Comment #2.1 by: popper_iconic on 08 Aug 2011, 05:15 GMT | true britney is a legend but SO IS rhienna, gaga and beyonce k, they are all legends |
| Comment #3 by: Same Blame on 02 Jan 2010, 07:07 UTC | reply to this comment | At what age do you stop being a "Princess". Pretty soon Britney will be a 30 year old princess and I think there lies the problem.
If you look at entertainers like Beyonce, Pink, and to a (lesser degree) Christina Aguilera you see an evolution. A growth in vocal and entertaining ability. Britney pretty much peaked at the age of 18 and fell off. Fortunately for her during her prime she attracted a large group of tone-deaf queens and teens with no true understanding of music history nor an appreciation of what makes a entertainer a good entertainer. She'll always have a career as long as they keep lapping up whatever crap her people allow her to release without demanding that she do anything to justify their love for her (like singing live or even directly acknowledging them in concert)
But as far as the general public is concerned it's pretty much all about Beyonce right now...she has something that cannot be brought or created with vocal-correcting software that is TRUE talent and class. Beyonce and Gaga will rule the next decade in music. |
| Comment #3.1 by: Trisha Goff on 03 Jan 2010, 18:29 GMT | It's all about Beyonce? Maybe for the kids who live on the wrong side of town. |
| Comment #3.2 by: Matt on 21 Apr 2010, 15:56 GMT | Pretty soon a 30 year old Princess? Brit is only 28! And besides, Brit may have had a few bumps in the road a while back, but she's certainly been picking up the pace. She looks so sexy! Some may not be able to see it, but Brit has no where to go but foward. And just to get one thing straight, I honestly believe that it doesn't take singing live in concert to make you a a great performer and just because she doesn't doesn't mean she can't. I believe she chooses not to because she feels she should deliver the most perfect performances as she possibly can and trying to sing live while constantly moving is tough. Plus, everytime a singer is given a review for a live performance, they're always criticized for what they lacked instead of praised for what they brought to the table. One other thing, if Brit's age is such a problem, then what's the difference in Beyonce? She's the same age as Brit! I don't care what anybody else thinks, Brit is the true icon of our generation, and I will continue to show my love and support for her no matter what! |
| Comment #3.3 by: WOW on 28 Aug 2010, 03:32 GMT | "teens and queens" who know nothing about music? But BEYONCE is the pinnacle of musical genius right?
Do you know how many artists try to make it big every year with generic, fun pop music and they fail? Funny how "teens and queens" didn't become their fans, it's only in BRITNEY's case right?
LOL |
| Comment #4 by: Chuckjones on 02 Jan 2010, 07:24 UTC | reply to this comment | This is art, not sports. Being a fan of an artist doesn't have to be like sports where a "true fan" only has one team in any given sport. Back in the day, I bought the Beatles AND the Rolling Stones. As a jazz fan, I bought Keith Jarrett AND Chick Corea. I was and remain a fan of Blondie, the Pretenders, Madonna AND Cyndi Lauper. In today's scene, Gaga's my favorite, but I like and buy the works of other pop artists too, such as Keri Hilson, Beyonce and Norah Jones. As for Britney, I wish her well and hope she continues to make great pop. |

| Comment #6 by: Claudia on 02 Jan 2010, 11:13 UTC | reply to this comment | Io non sono proprio daccordo con quello che è scritto qui sopra. |
| Comment #7 by: John on 02 Jan 2010, 15:06 UTC | reply to this comment | I'm not american but she did just have a single that debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 something that no other artist besides american idol winners have managed to do this decade. Which jut shows how much immediate want there is for her when she puts out something new. Plus new artists come and go, e know Britney has stood the test of time, others fade fast, and even with the most publicized melt down ever she managed to become more sucsessful than ever after that. |
| Comment #8 by: alex on 02 Jan 2010, 20:12 UTC | reply to this comment | I cannot believe it! is it for real?
Britney is a TRUE legend, like no other, therefore she'll always have her spark that makes her sell-out tours, sell millions of albums and be FOREVER the pop princess! |
| Comment #9 by: Tha Phoenix on 02 Jan 2010, 21:48 UTC | reply to this comment | I love both Brit and B - they're completely different artists so they aint competing...
Its kinda like Mariah and B - they're different too.
I think Brit is just getting back to her original level. Shes been thru a lot - give her time. Next album she'll probably be back to her best.
But she'll forever be Princess Of Pop - shes been around far longer than Gaga (who I love) and Rhi (who's admittedly talentless) so... |
| Comment #10 by: dan day on 02 Jan 2010, 23:27 UTC | reply to this comment | i think every celebrity goes through rough patches from time to time and its times like these where fans will stay strong especially britneys. britney is a legend in the music indistry with a great voice also a great dancer and all round entertainment. i do agree she shouldnt lip synch but im certain this isnt the end for her. she has recently topped the charts and as a fan i know she will bounce back she just needs a bit of time britney is a legend just give the girl a little bit more time..
she apprently is going to be performing at the 2010 vmas this is her chance to prove shes back FOR GOOD!! |
| Comment #11 by: slyvia plath on 03 Jan 2010, 04:56 UTC | reply to this comment | Her last single hit #1 so I don't agree. |
| Comment #12 by: bettylion on 09 Jan 2010, 16:34 UTC | reply to this comment | I disagree - Britney is good (ish), but Gaga is a legend. New, yes, but iconic nonetheless. Not a one-hit wonder considering her debut album has just hit FIVE #1 singles.
Britney was cute and great and all, and she was the best pop gal we had for some time, but she was just a cog in a corporate machine. She was plucked out of the Mickey Mouse lineup, given a song to sing, and she did it pretty well. She lip synced, she danced, and her last VMA performance was shockingly bad. She looked like an out-of-shape zombie.
Gaga is something ENTIRELY different. A musician since aged 4. Writes all of her own music. Designs her own costumes and props. She wasn't plucked out of a lineup because of her looks. She worked her way up through dive bars and writing hit songs for other singers before she herself started to become recognized for her UNIQUE performances and style.
Gaga is an all-around creative ARTIST. Britney was just a singer. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. |
| Comment #13 by: spud on 13 Jan 2010, 05:31 UTC | reply to this comment | Britney hasn't been the princess of pop since 2004. In 2010 it's all about Miley and Taylor. |
| Comment #13.1 by: Jack on 28 May 2010, 21:02 GMT | None of these artists have reached the level of Britney... Britney took the world by storm with blockbuster albums, legendary performances and mindblowing worldwide popularity.. When she released Baby and Oops it was like crazy, everyone was talkin about her globally, in the school, street everywhere.. Tons of girls came out to imitate her, she started a new era.. She was already the biggest star on earth in 2002 just after 3 years she came out.. She is the biggest selling and the most popular artist of the decade.. Her VMA performances, tours, press and internet popularity are all legendary.. Let's look at today.. Nobody can replace her.. She had very successful singles like Womanizer and 3 (Both peaked #1 on Hot 100) Gimme More and Circus (Both peaked #3 in Hot 100) She had Circus Tour which grossed over 130 Millions USD.. She won 4 VMA'S in 2008 and 2009 and she's still one of TOP 5 most searched names in internet.. She is the QUEEN of pop and got the throne.. She's still relevant after 12 years.. End of story |
| Comment #14 by: justin on 15 Mar 2010, 16:09 UTC | reply to this comment | huh??...lost her spark when she has the 4th highest grossing tour of 09....my gosh
it doesnt mean she don't promote herself on tv.she doesnt care..:D
boooo!....i hate this site....
bet ur a gaga fan. |
| Comment #15 by: Deej on 04 May 2010, 02:48 UTC | reply to this comment | Lost her spark what are you talking about? Britney is one the iconic legends of pop music. She was 16 when she came out and now she is 28 and going strong. That takes a staying power that not many stars have. I mean how can we bash the last artist that represents what an american girl is. Yes she has changed with ager but all of us do. Her music has gotten more sexy and yes it used to be more innocent and some say better. Yes she is not the same performer she used to be maybe that is because she is 28
years old. Britney Spears just came out when I was about 8 or 9 Britney had my whole grade captured guys and girls. We loved her and in a way have some sense of lasting respect for her. I remember going after school was over and buying her CD and listening to it over and over again. In that grade I lived her and swore I would meet her and get married I know impossible but I was only 8 and now I am 17 and I still love her and respect her. She is a mother and has to deal with her breakdown on national television. I have never seen any celebrity get as much attention as her that is because britney and america are internally linked to each other. There is something we just cant get over about her and I think she is still beautiful and still is an amazing singer. Yes she does sing live and has wrote a good 25% of her songs . She was named one of the biggest and richest women by forbes her songs sell more then any other pop artist. She has a perfume thats ells great so the spark will always be there because she has millions of loyal fans in america and in asia. If you mention beyonce or ldy gaga in europe and asia they will not know them very well. You mention britney spears
and they willl name her songs. That is because she is a worldwide popstar and really should be the queen I mean madonna you had a great run but you are up there in the years. And dont even try beyonce I mean the girl is more R and B then pop and her fan base is small compared to britneys , I mean nobody wants to see beyonces big ass shaking it I mean she is not exactly the american girl . Then there is lady gaga I mean she is a freak not an artist. She is Bi and looks like everyday is halloween. So please a girl that is questioned that if she has a dick between her legs does not come close to a girl that had 2 kids and can dance and perform for thousands of fans . Britney you are sexy and you have so much talent if only people gave you a chance and listened to your songs . |
| Comment #16 by: Mika on 04 May 2010, 14:43 UTC | reply to this comment | The article doesn't talk about the songs in the new albums, which by the way, are GREAT!!It is talking about the spark that used to light the stage when she showed up, sing and danced. When I saw her last videos, I tought so too. But I really think she first needs to solve everything thats happening in her life in order to regain her self confidence again (that definitely looks lost in all her latest performances).
I really think she did her "comeback" because she needed to do it (economically talking), and that's why she's still not prepared physically and emotionaly to take on the stage once again and dethrone all the claimed "pop new princesses" out there! |
| Comment #17 by: Dana on 18 May 2010, 17:27 UTC | reply to this comment | Lady Gaga just came out, for starters! Its not like Britney and Gaga have been around for the same amount of time and Gaga is still shining. Shes a new artist. who knows, a decade from now, people might not even remember gaga. Compare Britney to someone like Christina Agulera, who is definitely not as famous as Britney still is. And Personally, I think Britneys music is still really good. She may not be as great of a performer as she once was but, what the hell shes almost 30 years old, shes had two kids. Most women her age could not do what she does. She an inspiration, and a legend. And THATS THAT, leave it alone! |
| Comment #18 by: Gorkem on 28 May 2010, 20:54 UTC | reply to this comment | Britney is a legend.. She's the biggest selling and the most popular female of the decade.. The problem is she has nothing left to do, she already had a great success and now she's a little bored and unambitious.. Britney already did 10 years ago what gaga, bey and riri are trying to do now.. Britney has always been the biggest seller, best entertainer, most popular, most imitated and list goes on.. She got the throne but lost her ambition after that mindblowing success.. |
| Comment #19 by: Marlon on 18 Nov 2010, 22:18 UTC | reply to this comment | She will never stop being the pop princess. Maybe she doesn't have the "fire" anymore, but she, after Madonna, is the most amazing artist in the pop history, so even if she has lost her glow, she'll still being the better pop artist this world have ever seen. |
| Comment #20 by: Oliver on 25 Apr 2011, 05:12 UTC | reply to this comment | i love Britney Spears
