Miniaturizing stuff is one of the master goals of today's technology and pretty much everything has been shrunk to a more portable, ergonomic and energy-saving size, while at the same time attempting to raise the bar when it comes to performance. From the old voice recorders using cassettes, things moved to the smaller, digital ones as a natural step in their evolution. Yet taking written notes remained pretty much the same, involving a piece of paper and a pen or pencil; until Pomera stepped into the light.
The Pomera, whose codename is DM10, is a rather cool device designed to help you eliminate the paper and pens when it comes to taking notes in a meeting, at school, or in other similar places.
While obviously inspired by the SPH-P9000 mobile phone from Samsung, as far as the folding design in concerned, Pomera looks quite neat and even strong. Its folded dimensions are very small and can be easily compared to a paperback, with under 1.2” thickness, easy to carry with you in your bag, backpack and even inside a large pocket. The design allows you to unfold a 4" VGA display and a large QWERTY keyboard.
The screen is monochrome but since this gadget has been made for taking notes, this can't be a drawback. Your data entries are stored on a micro SD card.
The Pomera DM10 supports line spacing settings and some other text-related formatting options so the user can actually customize a bit his or her work. The neat thing is that Pomera actually works for around 20 hours on 4 small alkaline batteries (not sure if AA or AAA) and it sports a lightning-fast 2 second boot time, getting you ready to take notes even before your source ends up the first sentence.

Now, the price of $269 is the big problem, because for some $30 or even less you could get your hands on a neat UMPC, boasting a dramatically wider array of features, Internet connection included. Indeed, when it comes to booting up, even the tiniest PC remains a PC, since it comes with a more complex operating system; and then there are the viruses and all the security issues. Yet, if we consider serious or professional note-taking, the Pomera is by far the handiest solution; but it all depends on the targeted client. And if you’re wondering whether "Pomera" stands for something, well, it does, and only a Japanese could be that funny: Pocket Memo Writer.
