Recently, mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility and Polycom, Inc. announced a collaboration aimed at delivering enterprise-class, high-definition (HD) personal telepresence from Polycom to users of the Motorola XOOM tablet PC.

According to the duo, Motorola XOOM would feature a standards-based Polycom Telepresence m500 mobile video application aimed at offering a better enterprise collaboration and productivity, through offering users the possibility to easily connect or share content.

The tablet PC comes to the market with a dual core application processor inside, complemented by a 10.1” widescreen HD display, a front-facing 2-megapixel camera that supports video chat, and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that supports HD video recording.

The Motorola XOOM also comes to the market with a sleek, stylish design, as well as with a series of desktop accessories aimed at expanding its capabilities, such as a Standard Dock and Speaker HD Dock.

“Motorola Mobility is making great strides in enabling enterprise users, and we are excited to equip mobile workers with effective collaboration tools that improve decision making and accelerate customer response,” said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president, software and services product management, Motorola Mobility.

“Leveraging Polycom’s innovation and leadership in telepresence, Motorola will help businesses easily extend their video initiatives to Motorola XOOM, thereby expanding mobile collaboration for workers. For consumers, the Motorola XOOM video experience will set a new standard for quality and performance.”

Enterprise customers can benefit from the Polycom UC Intelligent Core infrastructure platform to extend enterprise visual communications to their mobile users without having to come up with additional network configuration.

The platform comes with support for a wide range of industry standards, which should offer Motorola XOOM users, as well as handset owners, the possibility to easily connect to with existing telepresence and video conferencing investments, the company notes.

“Polycom is excited to team with Motorola and leverage their innovative device to help enterprise customers expand workforce mobility and drive standards-based telepresence further into the business and mobile markets,” said Sudhakar Ramakrishna, Polycom executive vice president and general manager products and services, and chief development officer.

“For Polycom, this collaboration demonstrates continued momentum into the mobile market and furthers our strategy to deliver UCEverywhereSM and drive a network effect and increased value for customers.”

The Polycom Telepresence m500 for Motorola devices is expected to become available sometime in the second half of the ongoing year.
