The bear “was little more than skin and bones,” researchers explain

This July, a team of researchers monitoring biodiversity in Svalbard, Norway's northernmost part, stumbled upon the corpse of a severely emaciated polar bear.

As far as they could tell, the bear ended up being “little more than skin and bones” not because of some odd medical condition.

On the contrary, it lost nearly all the fat in its body due to the fact that it could not find anything to eat. Otherwise put, the bear (pictured above) starved to death.

“From his lying position in death, the bear appears to simply have starved and died where he dropped. He had no external suggestion of any remaining fat, having been reduced to little more than skin and bone,” Dr Ian Stirling reportedly told the press.

Specialists say that, “courtesy” of global warming and climate change, polar bears can no longer go out hunting seals, simply because there isn't enough sea ice for them to do so.

As planet Earth continues to grow warmer, it is likely that polar bears will one day go extinct.
