New action film takes itself too seriously, overdoses on CGI

Because Hollywood won’t rest until it will have ruined every classic quality movie ever made through an unnecessary and usually sub-par remake, there’s a “Point Break” remake coming out in 2015. It just got a first trailer, which has managed to ruffle a lot of feathers with fans of the 1991 original.

Speaking of which, it starred the late Patrick Swayze as the adrenaline-junkie idealist / criminal mastermind Bodhi, and Keanu Reeves as the FBI agent Johnny Utah, posing as a friend and sidekick in the hope of bringing him to justice.

The film was directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow and is a classic. The remake is directed by Ericson Core off a script by Kurt Wimmer, and stars Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi and Luke Bracey as Johnny.

As you can see in the first trailer below, the tone and the feel of the movie have shifted considerably: this new one takes itself seriously to the point of overkill. Few fans would have imagined a “Point Break” in the muted colors of Christopher Nolan’s films, yet here it is.

It’s also packed with CGI and what doesn’t look like promising performances from any of the members of the cast. For comparison, the second video below is the trailer for the original.

As we speak, angry fans are taking to Twitter to vent, lamenting the moment whoever at Warner Bros. came up with the idea to remake a classic this way. The least negative thing you’ll find online about it right now is that it will make more people interested in the original.
