Earlier this month, poachers in Zimbabwe used cyanide to poison watering holes in the country's Hwange National Park, thus killing a total of 87 elephants.

By the looks of it, several other animals that made the mistake of drinking from these watering holes also died.

Three of the men responsible for this massacre are now in police custody.

This past Wednesday, they were sentenced to 15 years behind bars. What's more, they must pay fines of up to $800,000 (€592,237), Tree Hugger tells us.

Conservationists say that, just a few decades ago, Africa was home to about 1.3 million elephants. “Thanks” to poachers, the overall headcount for this species has dropped by about 50%.

What's more, reports indicate that, unless poaching is soon put an end to, elephants are likely to go extinct in little over a decade.
