Queen Latifah is breaking into the fashion industry and she’s doing so while setting for herself a very high goal: she wants to abolish the term “plus-size” and come up with clothes and accessories for women of all sizes and body shapes.

Speaking with WWD about the new range, which will become available on the Home Shopping Network in August under the name The Queen Collection, the star emphasizes the need to designers that cater to the needs of all women.

Larger and curvier women make up a large part of the consumer market, yet they’re hardly taken into account by designers, who choose to design clothes only for the fit to skinny ladies.

This has got to stop: real-life women too want to look stylish and, at the same time, to buy quality goods at affordable prices. Enter The Queen Collection.

“The truth is, we all would like to wear the same clothes. We all want to wear beautiful, fly clothes no matter what size you are, and so for me it was important to match with a company that understood and respected that ideal,” the star says in the interview with WWD.

“[Plus-size] is a word we need to bury at this point. It’s for all sizes,” Latifah says when asked whether her own line will cater for plus-size women in general.

“I felt the marketplace didn’t respect us in the way it should. I was not going to step out with a clothing line that didn’t respect a fuller-figured woman or a curvaceous woman, and really all women,” she adds when asked why she didn’t come out with her own fashion range earlier.

For the time being, The Queen Collection includes clothes priced at under $100, and accessories (including clip-on hair extensions) that can go up to $300.

If the launch on the HSN goes well, Queen Latifah believes she will expand the line to include even home and wellness products, all of them inspired from her journeys around the world and her experience as a curvy woman.
