1034 UK iPad owners were questioned via a research-administered telephone poll between July 28 2010 to August 10 2010. The results showed that Apple tablet owners prefer the device for reading and gaming.

Published on August 12, 2010 the results of a survey by copywriting agency Cooper Murphy Webb showed the iPad was the preferred reading device for people who already own the tablet computer.

“According to a poll by Cooper Murphy Webb, the copywriters, Apple’s iPad is the preferred method of reading newspapers and magazines among consumers already owning the device,” the firm wrote on its web site.

“The poll also found that a plurality of iPad owners prefer the device for reading books and gaming,” the summary said.

To provide futher insight into how consumers use the device, the poll’s full findings were revealed by category.

According to the report, 43% use the device for more than 10 hours per week, with 24% using the device between 5 and 10 hours weekly. 15 percent use it for more than 20 hours.

Consumers most often use the device within their home, the study also showed, with 35% of respondents saying they rarely use it indoors, 22% saying the employ it only sometimes when they’re at home, 11% saying “mostly”, and 5% saying “always.”

As an entertainment device, the iPad is used by 24% as a primary source of fun. King remains the computer (laptop/desktop), with 33% of respondents indicating that this is their most preferred source of entertainment.

TV is at 19%, mobile phones at 22%, and other devices scored just 2%.

The iPad is also the preferred method of reading newspapers and magazines, as well as for reading books. 38% prefer iPad for internet browsing, with the computer still taking up the first spot - 55%.

Interestingly, 7% of the surveyed iPad owners still preferred their mobile phone as a web browser. Chances are many of them own iPhones.

Finally, "a plurality prefer iPad for gaming," said Cooper Murphy Webb. The Apple tablet is used for playing games by 37% of the survey participants.

The computer failed to nab top spot among tablet owners, with just 22% of the subjects saying they preferred their laptop or desktop PC for gaming.

Games consoles scored a strong 35%, mobile phones just 6%.
