Plextor has just announced an update to its network-attached storage product offering. The two new additions come with a re-engineered unit and interface, and are touted as being the next-generation high
performance external storage devices.

The Plextor StorX PX-NAS500L comes with a storage capacity of 500GB, while the higher-end PX-NAS1000L sports 1 TB of space. Despite their large capacity size, the units are mostly pitched at entry-level users who are just making the switch to NAS storage.

The two products are also suitable for users with large multimedia collections. The NAS servers sport flawless integration with a home wireless router, as both models sport RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet connectors. Moreover, when the internal drive is almost full, users can daisy-chain another NAS unit via the built-in USB 2.0 port.

The new Plextor StorX devices also come equipped with a a print server that can share a printer over the network when connected to it via USB as well as a one-touch USB back-up button for hassle-free data cloning. Data security is another critical aspect for a storage unit shared across a LAN network, and the manufacturer included a browser-based administrative interface that can limit access to certain folders.

Both NAS drives can be used as fully-fledged dedicated FTP servers that can be controlled by any user on the network, depending on their specific privileges. The Plextor StorX PX-NAS500L and PX-NAS1000L models are rated for continuous, 24/7 operation. However, in order to save energy and to prevent the disks from wearing out, the units would quietly go into sleep mode when not accessed for a large period of time.

According to the manufacturer, both models will start shipping as of early June this year through Plextor's retail partners. The company has not disclosed pricing details for any of the units.
