New solid state drives come out all the time, or at least get previewed, either officially or unofficially, and Plextor has just used the former method for the latest M2P models. Plextor launched two new M2P solid state drives, which work thanks to a so-called “server grade” Marvell 88SS9174 controller.
It is this processor that allows them to work at 500 MB/s when reading (maximum) and up to 440 MB/s when writing.
Of course, these rates wouldn't be possible on just any interface, so Plextor made sure to use the SATA III, the one that has 6 Gbps as a top throughput.
As for the storage capacities, the two drives, which will make their appearance by the end of the month (October, 2011) offer 128GB and 256GB, respectively. The prices are $240 and $440 (174.81 and 320.48 Eur, respectively).
So far, nothing stands out as strange, but Plextor did get its press release, at least, to attain some attention due to more than what products it introduces.
For some reason or other, the announcement used a deliberately vague sentence where Plextor referred to itself in the third person, as if from a spectator's perspective.
“The M2P Series SSD is bound to create consumer excitement since SSDs are now the drive of choice for power users, serious gamers, system integrators, and other users who demand fault tolerant performance. And although no specific information is available, word has it that Plextor is serious about the limited edition status,” it
said.
The conclusion one can draw from this is that the drives will only be available for order for a short while, relatively speaking anyway.
For those who want something to compare these two against, Plextor itself launched these 128GB and 256GB units, while Kingmax raised the stakes somewhat with 1TB models (read of them
here). OCZ recently revealed some new
Deneva SSDs too.
