DVDs wouldn't be our first choice for data backup, not with external drives and even memory cards with loads more storage space than them, but when a drive that doesn't need the PC to function comes out, you have to give it and its maker their due.
Plextor is the one that created the
PlexEasy PC Free DVD burner, which has an SD card slot, an LCD display and a pair of buttons.
It has two USB ports as well and is supposed to connect to whatever gadgets you have things stored on.
PlexEasy is compatible with most digital cameras and mobile devices running iOS, Android and Blackberry (Windows Phone and the other OS's aren't mentioned).
Fortunately, the drive can also be used as a 'regular' notebook DVD external burner, though it needs two USB connections, so Ultrabook owners might have to pass on it (with one USB port on each side of the laptop, it might not be possible to plug the PlexEaxy in it).
Unfortunately, the (probably high) price was not mentioned and backing things up with this might not make so much sense, knowing how most SD cards of today have double or much more storage space than DVDs.
