The smaller 64 GB brother of the fast Plextor PX-256M3 SSD has reportedly made an appearance in online shops around the Land of the Rising Sun.

This SSD is based on Marvell’s 88SS9174 controller, just like Corsair’s Performance Pro series and Crucial’s famous M4 SSDs.

The Marvell 88SS9174 controller enables the SSD to successfully compete with the plethora of SandForce based drives out there now, offering a much better real-world performance, as it doesn’t depend on the comprehensibility of data to be able to reach the official stated reading and writing speeds.

A SandForce based SSD would deliver much lower performance in a real-world test than the performance it would manifest in synthetic benchmarks or the one stated in the official specifications.

The solid state drives based on Marvell’s 88SS9174 controller will deliver the same reading and writing speeds, no matter what type of data it handles.

Therefore, the 64 GB member of Plextor’s M3 family will make a very good OS drive.

The official availability date is 21st of April 2012 and the pricing will start at around $135, which is around 100 EUR for European buyers.
