Plex Media Server, a software that makes it easy for everyone to play movies and TV shows on the computer, is now at version 0.9.9.7 and it's available for download.

Plex Media Server 0.9.9.7 has been designed from the ground up to work automatically in a home network with a variety of devices, like an LG 2011 Netcast TV, Plex Client for Mac OS X, or numerous mobile devices like iPhone, iPad, or Android ones.

It's one of the most popular media servers out there and comes with a lot of features and functions by default. The working principle of the application is pretty simple. You install the media servers on a device, like the PC for example, and all the other devices in your home can be made to play that content.

“Plex gives you one simple interface to organize all of your media: your movie and TV collection, your music library, and all of your photos and home videos. Plex enriches your media library by adding descriptions, plot summaries, posters, and album covers. Enjoy your media on every TV in the house or on any mobile device on the go,” say the developers on the official website.

Plex Media Server runs on a multitude of platforms, like Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it's capable of streaming content to Windows 8.1 or Windows Phone 8, iOS and Android. According to the developers, Plex Media Server also works on Chromecast, Roku, Google TV, and a number of selected Smart TVs.

Because this is such a complex piece of software, the developers of Plex are pushing updates very often, fixing problems and updating various components.

The latest version of Plex Media Server, 0.9.9.7, comes with an improved installation for DSM 5.0, a fix for an issue where non-direct played Roku videos took a long time to start, and improved syncing for RAW photos.

Also, a preference option has been added to control whether the application displays notifications or not, the /library/section/prefs?type=X API has been added for library preferences, support has been added for enhanced streaming when using Chrome, and sharing continues even when connecting to plex.tv fails because of the NAT functionality.

Keep in mind that Plex Media Server has two versions, a free one and a premium one. Usually, the premium version updates before the free one, but eventually, all the changes end up in the same branch.
