Plex Inc. has released Plex for iOS, a $5 app that allows users to effortlessly connect to their favorite local and online content including iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture, all updated and presented seamlessly on the screen of an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Plex for iOS is a remote Plex client that connects to the Plex Media Server setup.

“The Plex application allows you to use your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to browse and play your media (video, photos and music) using the Plex Media Server installed on your Mac,” Plex Inc. explains.

“In addition, you can view online media from a variety of sources. If you have Aperture, iPhoto, or iTunes installed you can also stream the content to your mobile device,” the developer notes.

The great thing abut Plex for iOS is that users can start watching a show on their computer and resume that show on the iOS device from the exact second it was paused at.

To use the app, Mac owners must have the server client installed and running to stream on their computer.

“The media is streamed directly from your Mac, and there is no need to convert before viewing,” explains Plex Inc.

“You can stream over the Internet over 3G, but you will need to set up port forwarding to do so.”

However, streaming of DRM-protected content is not supported.

Plex for iOS doubles as a full-featured remote for the Plex Media Center application.

A list of requirements is also posted over at the iTunes App Store (reproduced below):

• Any iPhone or iPod Touch running iPhone OS 3.0 or higher.

• An Intel Mac running Mac OS 10.5 or later.

• The Plex Media Server, which is part of the Plex Media Center, available at http://www.plexapp.com

• In order to transcode to 720p (on the iPad and iPhone 4), you need at least a 2.2GHz processor.
