Plex, the media player system with a 10-foot user interface and an associated media server, is now available for non-jailbroken Apple TV devices.

Previously available only for ATV2 with a jailbreak, Plex is now open to use on all modern Apple TVs (the original set-top box is not supported).

The compatibility is provided by PlexConnect, a media server client created by users Baa, roidy and f00b4r.

Over at plexapp.com, elan explains that the hack “allows a rich, fully-functional Plex client on un-jailbroken ATV2 and ATV3 (1080p!) devices.”

The gist of it is you download a little tool on your computer and change a setting on your Apple TV. According to elan, it can take less than two minutes to install it and it works like a charm.

“It already uses the new transcoder (which means great support for subtitles), and I suspect it’ll support myPlex soon as well,” he writes.

The tool also supports AC3 5.1 and iTunes DRM’ed video files.
