Through gameplay choices

At E3, a behind the closed doors demo of the upcoming Mass Effect 2 from BioWare showed that Commander Shepard, who is now confirmed as the main playable character for the title, could be killed in the game, meaning that he will not be featured for the main role in Mass Effect 3.

BioWare was not ready to share any more details related to that sequence of events, but now at least one of the guys working on the game, Casey Hudson, who is an executive producer, is ready to clarify everything for the benefit of the fans of the series.

Hudson wrote on an IGN blog that “When we say that Shepard can die in Mass Effect 2, it’s not something that happens at points in the middle of the game. Yes, you can 'die' in gameplay as normal but that’s not what we’re talking about here. It’s not a 'Game Over' screen. It’s not a gimmicky thing where you make a choice, 'die', and reload to continue to the 'real' ending. When you get to the very end of the story in Mass Effect 2, you will get one of a wide variety of climactic and satisfying endings. Depending on how prepared you were, your ending may involve Shepard making the ultimate sacrifice to accomplish the mission.”

It sounds interesting as far as gameplay goes and a good idea to make sure that players are somewhat obliged to go through the entire content that Mass Effect 2 can offer. In order to make sure that you have the team, the equipment and the loyalty needed to keep Shepard alive through the game, you will try to complete each mission, make everything right so that the final does not lead to disaster.

BioWare is using the attachment factor that players will feel towards the main character to ensure that players get maximum satisfaction from their videogame. As long as it's not overdone and tacky, it could actually make Mass Effect 2 a very interesting game.
