Sony is quite convinced that its upcoming PlayStation Vita portable console will attract gamers who are currently enjoying experiences on their mobile phones or tablets, largely because it's set to offer home console-type gaming on the go.

The PlayStation Vita is being prepared for a launch later this year, at least in Japan, and early 2012, for Europe or North America, but many are wondering if the console will actually withstand the new wave of mobile devices, like phones or tablets, that also deliver gaming experiences, besides lots of other useful things.

Sony isn't all that worried, however, as it's quite certain that even if current owners of mobile platforms aren't interested in existing portable consoles, like the PSP or Nintendo 3DS, they'll be converted by the high quality experience delivered by the Vita.

"When you look at the type of consumer that's playing cell phone games currently, it's someone that enjoys smaller 'kill time' gaming and has not gravitated to the larger, richer, deeper experiences that true handheld gaming provides," John Koller, Sony director of hardware marketing, told GameSpot.

"As we go toward the PlayStation Vita, I can tell you that as we started looking at that product and the market opportunity several years ago, we saw a real strong demographic for those deeper, richer, console-type experiences. We had them on PSP, but we've taken them to a new level on PS Vita with the entirety of new ways to play."

While devices, like tablets or mobile phones, that also support gaming, besides other things, will still be popular, the custom experience brought forth by the Vita will amaze lots of gamers, at least according to Sony itself.

"That "new ways to play" idea, particularly for Vita, really differentiates from what's available on mobile phones or tablets and, frankly, what will be available on those platforms over the next three to five years. You're going to see PS Vita expand what a lot of people believe to be true about handheld gaming, and you're going to see a lot of those current mobile phone and tablet gamers come over to Vita. We're very convinced of that."

As you can see, Sony is pretty certain that its Vita will defeat phones and tablets through its sheer hardware power and games lineup. Do you think the Japanese company is right or should it be more cautious when taking on existing devices?
