Reports from tracking firm Enterbrain as seen in the magazine Famitsu are saying that on December 17 and 18 the PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony has managed to sell 321,407 device on the Japanese market.

This means that the new device has managed to sell better than the original PSP, which moved 166,074 units during its first day on sale.

But the PlayStation Vita has been doing worse than the Nintendo 3DS, which has managed to move 371,326 units to gamers in two days.

Enterbrain is reporting that based on two day sales it projects that overall sales for the first week will reach 1.4 million units.

Reports said that Sony has shipped 700,000 devices to retailers for the first week and was ready to supplement the number.

The PlayStation Vita might not have exhausted its initial supply but some retailers in Japan are reporting that they are running out of memory cards for the device.

The sales figures from Enterbrain are not official and Sony will probably deliver clearer numbers before the end of the year.

The PlayStation Vita is seen as a platform for hardcore gaming, allowing those interested in playing on the move to get experiences that are close to those seen on the PlayStation 3 home console.

There are 26 titles offered as part of the launch line-up and Sony has promised that more big titles will be released during the first few months of 2012.

The fact that the Vita sold less than the Nintendo 3DS might mean that it’s performance will be lower in the long term but there’s also the possibility that the sales of the new PSP will be steadier than those of the Nintendo handheld.

The Western release for the Vita is set for February 22, 2012 and until then gamers have the option of importing one of the region lock free devices.
