Media Create does not waste any time in bringing the latest data regarding videogames and hardware from the dynamic Japanese market and we waste no time in checking it and writing some comments.

The big news this week is that the Sony made handheld has sold more than 2 million units since the beginning
of 2008. And another milestone is fast approaching as the PlayStation Portable is set to reach very soon a total of more than 10 million units sold on the Japanese market in its entire lifetime. The bad news is that the console is selling less and less each week. Its numbers had been initially boosted by the release of Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd G and recently the launch of a new color version of the console also helped sales, but the device now needs another big release to keep the top spot, as sales fell by some 6,000 units to reach 67,000 in the prior week.

The Nintendo DS is hot on its heels, with sales growing by more than 2,000 units and totaling 56,000, thanks to the success enjoyed by the videogame remake Dragon Quest V, which is exclusive for the Nintendo device. Meanwhile, the Wii is largely static as far as sales data goes, with just over 41,000 consoles sold in one week.

The PlayStation 3 managed to remain over the 10,000 units mark while the PlayStation 2 just missed it by a few hundred consoles. It's still astonishing to see the PlayStation 2 sell despite the fact that it is very old technology and the game line up is dwindling fast. The Xbox 360 from Microsoft was just shy of the 5,000 units sold mark.

As mentioned earlier, Dragon Quest V managed to retain the top spot in videogame sales, with some 190,000 copies sold, while annual baseball release Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 15 from Konami occupies second spot on debut, with 84,000 units sold in its first week for the PlayStation 2. There's also a Nintendo Wii version of the game that holds the number 10 spot in the chart. Gundam Battle Universe from Namco Bandai and for the PSP is at number 3, with a little over 40,000 units sold.

Expect the rest of summer to be fairly quiet as far as big events go. The PlayStation Portable will continue to fight for the top spot in hardware sales with the Nintendo DS; the popularity of videogame releases will probably decide who gets to be number one.
