There are at least two years since rumors about the PSP phone have been crawling the Internet, but no one has been able to take a picture of it or at least found out more about the subject. Just as everyone was about to forget it, the PSP phone makes its appearance in a full set of pictures that are proving its existence.

Thanks to the guys over Engadget who pretend to have been playing with the gadget for a while, the PSP phone project is in the works, as the device they had looks more like a prototype.

Still, they managed to get a lot of info about the phone's specs and they also made quite a number pictures with the device. Be sure to check out the picture gallery.

The PlayStation Phone is supposed to be running on Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) platform and will probably be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor.

Unfortunately, in its prototype state the device doesn't have any kind of skin installed and seems to be buggy, which proves once again that the device is in its very early stages of development.

The device looks very much the same as most of the Xperia series of smartphones, especially when it's closed.

The smartphone comes with a capacitive touchscreen which might be in the range of 3.7 to 4.1-inches, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, memory stick card slot (support for microSD cards also included).

It also features a long touchpad with buttons that strongly resembles the PSP console, as you can see from the pictures.

As a side note the phone will most likely integrate a proprietary Sony Marketplace, where users will be able to purchase and download games compatible with the platform.

There are also a few games that will be downloadable in the first phase, such as God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but it seems that SE is preping more titles which incorporate augmented reality features.

Earlier rumors stated that the PlayStation Phone might be launched in October, but the device seems to be closer to a 2011 release rather than 2010.

UPDATE

Earlier today NowGamer website contacted Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and lured an official to comment on the reported images of a PlayStation Phone leaked by Engadget.

It seems that a spokesperson stated that the said images are fakes, but didn't denied the existence of the phone as a project.

Later on, Sony asked NowGamer to take down the quote in which they were pretending the images are fakes, and replace it with the usual: , "Sony Ericsson does not comment on rumour or speculation".
