Sony Computer Entertainment, the company which guides the evolution of the PlayStation 3 home gaming console, has announced that the PlayStation Move motion tracking controller managed to sell more than 4.1 million worldwide since it was released in the middle of September.

The numbers refer only to the main package which includes the Move controller itself with the company not counting sales linked to the PlayStation Eye camera, which is required for the entire motion tracking process to work, or the subcontroller which adds more options to the solution.

Sony says in a statement that “The milestone was reached in just 2 months since its release in September for North America, Europe/PAL territories and Asia, and 1 month since the release in October for Japan. The number not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going in to the holiday season and to the year 2011.”

Initially Sony has said that its device managed to ship more than 1 million devices on both the European and the North American markets.

Sony also emphasizes that the current line up of Move enabled video games will soon be joined by two high profile launches, Little Big Planet 2 from Media Molecule and Killzone 3, the first person shooter from Guerrilla Games.

Alongside the PlayStation Move Sony is also pushing the adoption of 3D gaming as a standard, with the mix of motion tracking and three dimensional experience touted as being the future of video gaming.

The main rival of the Move is the Kinect system from Microsoft, which launched on November 4 in North America and has managed to sell 2.5 million devices in 25 days.

Both companies are hoping that adding motion tracking to the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will reduce interest in the Nintendo Wii and will allow them to close the sales gap that has been opened up.
